El Dorado's defense shut out Sheridan in the second half Friday en route to a 49-14 6A-West victory. The Wildcats improved to 5-1 with the win over the winless Yellowjackets. Mon-Tré Marshall led the team with 20 tackles, including 14 unassisted, with two tackles for loss, two sacks and one interception. "He was around the ball a lot," said El Dorado defensive coordinator Justin Wylie. "An offense that runs it between the tackles and off-tackle as much as they did really suits what he does best." The Wildcats led 28-14 at the half. Sheridan controlled the time of possession early with a pair of long, sustained drives. The Yellowjackets had five possessions in the half, including one with less than a minute to go where they ran out the clock. The other possessions proved fruitful, however. "The third and the fourth drive, we just couldn't get them off the field. They wanted to try to hold the ball away from our offense. It was our job to not let them do that," said Wylie. "What was tricky about what they were doing, and it took a little bit to adjust to it, they moved a tackle over and put a tight end in the tackle position, opposite side. They moved guys around and would shift anywhere from one guy to four guys, try to catch you short a man on a particular side and then run it that way." Sheridan also converted on third downs, including a couple third-and-long situations. "When we had opportunities to get 'em off the field, we didn't get 'em off the field," said Wylie. "That's something we have to do a better job of because they made us play a lot of plays in the first half. We played 46 snaps in the first half." The Wildcats finally got off their heels in the second half, helped by a touchdown and turnover, which forced Sheridan out of its game plan. "We got our motor running a little bit better and then the next time they get the ball it's a three-score game and they can't be as patient as they were," said Wylie. "And, we played their run better. They tried to come back and do some of the things they did in the first half but when we had a three-score lead on them, they were in a position they didn't want to be in, which is the position we wanted them in, which was to try to throw it." Donovan Walter had 12 tackles, including eight solos, with one pass knockdown and a QB hurry. Zac Donahue had seven tackles, including six solos. Keontae Barnes had seven tackles. Jacoby Hankton had five solo tackles, three tackles for loss and a sack. Bishop Foster had seven tackles. Jerric Jefferson had seven tackles. Duke Miller had a pass deflection to set up an interception by Jamarious Junior. Taliq Ellis forced a fumble on a kickoff, which was recovered by Quentin Frazier.
