The first week of the season provided some ups and downs for El Dorado.

The Wildcats fell in their opener against Greenbrier 7-1, but it was a 2-1 game until the Panthers scored five runs in the seventh to pull away.

El Dorado dropped their second straight by falling at Camden Fairview 8-7 Thursday before winning at Taylor 15-4 Friday for their first win. The Tigers scored three in first to take an early lead, but the Wildcats responded with five in the second and five more in the fourth to break open a close game.

“We played good, competitive baseball in the Greenbrier game, then it got away in the seventh,” said El Dorado coach Cannon Lester. “The Camden game, we weren’t ready to play. They had a good arm on the mound. They jumped on us early, and we couldn’t quite recover. The Taylor game, they jumped out on us, then we responded well the rest of the game.”

Against the Tigers, Derek Jobe went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Austin Jobe finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Jacob Boshears scored three runs while going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Chase Webb allowed five hits and four earned runs in four innings to pick up the win. He walked three and struck out seven.

The Wildcats’ bullpen threw three scoreless innings to close out the game with Boshears and Rick Cazenave combining to not allow any hits with four strikeouts between them.

The pitching performance on Friday followed a solid stint by Jobe, who worked 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with one walk and four strikeouts against the Cardinals. Against Greenbrier, Derek Jobe allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out four.

“Derek and Austin Jobe were dominant on the mound, and Chase Webb competed well on Friday and gave us some much needed innings,” Lester said.

At the plate, the Wildcats got great contributions from their seniors.

Derek Jobe had five hits in the Wildcats’ three games, as did Boshears, who was also 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs at Camden Fairview.

Shaun York, who had two hits in El Dorado’s games against Greenbrier and Camden Fairview, was 5-for-9 with three runs scored.

“Seniors Shaun York, Derek Jobe and Jacob Boshears all had good weeks at the plate,” Lester said. “Freshmen Connor Black (three runs scored) and Austin Jobe (4-for-10) had some really good at-bats.”

The Wildcats were scheduled to play at Monticello today but the game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

“We need to establish a few more arms this week, and look to have more competitive at-bats one through nine in order for seven innings,” Lester said.
